The Shift That Brings More Peace and Less Stress
In today’s Sunday episode, I’d like to reflect on a profound realization that, when it happens, feels like you’re finally liberated—free to understand everything that has pained you in the past.
It’s the realization of letting things be.
Really.
The more we try to force life, people, situations, or outcomes, the more we discover they resist us. The more we find to be frustrated about. The more grudges we hold, the heavier they weigh on us.
But once we realize that there’s nothing we can do to control others—that people are simply different from us, shaped by their own stories, histories, personalities, values—we can finally be free.
When we can see people and situations as they truly are, without attaching our expectations or demands, we become free - free from the burden of our own expectations. This, in turn, helps us clear the mental space to focus on what we are grateful for and what’s there to appreciate, rather than what is there to be upset about.
It’s a practice that can take years to master, but once you start shifting your thoughts—and with them, your emotions and energy—it becomes easier. You begin to realize how much lighter you feel when you let go of the need to control or fix everything around you. Because, in reality, peace doesn’t come from controlling the outside world; it comes from controlling your inner world.
Next time you find yourself thinking things should be a certain way or that someone should act differently, pause. Gently redirect your thoughts inward. Ask yourself, “How can I respond differently? How can I let go and let things be?” In doing this, you realize that nothing and no one has power over you—not the things that could upset you or the people who may frustrate you—because there’s simply nothing to be upset about anymore.
When we learn to let go of our expectations and accept things as they are, we free ourselves from the unnecessary burden of trying to control what was never ours to control. And in that surrender, we find the real freedom we’ve been searching for.
